Information and Policies

The Watchung Hills Regional High School Library Media Center provides students and staff with access to a wide range of materials and resources to meet their educational, professional, and personal needs. The Media Center has over 11,000 items, including an extensive reference and non-fiction collection, classic and popular fiction books, and educational DVDs, videocassettes and CD Rom disks. More than 90 educational and recreational magazines, one daily newspaper, and one local weekly newspaper are available.

4 desktop computers provide students with access to the Internet, 32 research databases, more than 1,200 e-Books, the card catalog, and Microsoft Office applications. In addition, the Media Center has 24 laptop computers for class research projects.
 

Media Center Hours

School Hours

The Media Center is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM and may be used for research, quiet study, or recreational reading of books, magazines and newspapers.

 

Virtual Hours

Access to the Media Center Follett Destiny online card catalog, subscription databases, eBooks, and Microsoft Office applications are available remotely 24/7.

Access HIVE Virtual Desktop for WHRHS subscription databases, eBooks, and MS Office 2010. Log on with your user name (Student ID number) and password.

 

 

Media Center Sign In

Students must sign in with the Media Center duty teacher when entering the library; they must sign out when leaving. Passes are not required during study hall, lunch or after school. Students who come to the library from a class must have an individual signed pass from their teacher.

 

 

Study Hall

An individual signed pass from a study hall teacher is required.
Students should report to their study hall for attendance
before coming to the Media Center.
Students are required to remain in the Media Center for the entire period.

Class

An individual signed pass from a subject teacher is required.
Teachers may issue up to five individual passes.

Lunch

No pass is required.
Students must eat their lunch before coming to the library.
Student are required to remain for the remainder of the lunch period.

After School


No pass is required.
Students may leave at any time.

 

 

Circulation Procedures

 

Checking Out Books
Students may check out up to 4 circulating books for a loan period of 10 school days. A due date slip is placed in the pocket of each book when it is checked out.

Books may be checked out during school hours or after school.

Books placed on reserve carts for specific projects may have restricted loan periods and renewal limits as specified by individual teachers.

Reference books, magazines, videos, and DVDs are not checked out to students.

Returning Books

Books may be returned during school hours or after school. A Book Drop is located in the front of the circulation desk adjacent to the gray detection panels.


Renewing Books

Books may be renewed twice. If there are no hold requests, books may be renewed as often as needed.

 

Books placed on hold for another student will not be renewed.

Students can renew books by coming to the Media Center, calling the Media Center at 647-4800 x2795, or emailing the Media Specialist, Mr. Scott Keele, at skeele@whrhs.org Students should use their WHRHS email address.


Overdue Fines
Books returned late are subject to overdue fines of 10¢ per school day, with a maximum fine of $30.00 per book.

Books placed on teachers' reserve carts, and with restricted loan periods, are subject to fines of 50¢ per school day. Fines are not charged on days when school is not in session.

Overdue notices will be distributed regularly by English teachers.

Students who owe more than $2.00 in fines, or have any overdue books, may not check out additional books until fines are paid and/or books are returned.

Lost or Damaged Books

Lost books should be reported to the Media Specialist as soon as possible. Students are responsible for replacement costs.

Students are responsible for replacement costs of books that are returned in damaged condition and cannot be repaired.
 

Computer Policies and Procedures

Media center computers and laptops are available for school work only. Students have access to subscription databases and eBooks, as well as Microsoft Word and other multimedia programs. Internet use is for educational purposes only.

Students must log on to computers and laptops with their student username and password.

 

Students should save all documents to their folder on the school server. Students may also email their work to teachers or to themselves.


A laser printer (Media Center HPL 4015) is available for student use in the Media Center. Students should try to conserve paper and ink and print only what is necessary.
 

Food and Drink Policy

Students are not permitted to eat or drink in the Media Center at any time. Water is permissable.

Personal Electronic Devices

Students are not permitted to use electronic devices in the Media Center at any time including cell phones, text messengers, cameras and so on.

Copy Machine

 

A coin-operated copier is available for student use in the Media Center. The charge for copies is 10¢ per side.
