The Grapes of Wrath
When Steinbeck wrote [The Grapes of Wrath], he thought industrial capitalism's exploitation of the poor had gone about as far as it could go...and that the country was on the verge of serious breakdown if something wasn't done about it.
The book's stark depiction of a working family among thousands trying to avoid starving to death amid the lush bounty of California's farm country made it one of the most controversial American novels of its time. It was denounced on the floor of the U.S. Senate and House, and banned in numerous jurisdictions.
